The Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program is an academic support service offered to undergraduate students at Eastern Michigan University through the support of Holman Learning Center.
SI is offered in a variety of undergraduate entry level courses including math, history, biology, chemistry, literature, economics, psychology, sociology, and political science. Participation in SI is voluntary.
The SI Leader will provide in-class announcements of the SI days/times/locations.
SI Sessions are offered two times a week and are free. SI is an opportunity to ask questions, learn new study techniques, and test yourself before the professor tests you!
SI Sessions generally start the second week of classes. The SI Leaders will gather information the first week of classes to schedule their SI Sessions at the most appropriate days, times and locations. You will be informed on a regular basis of the meeting information and any scheduling changes that need to be made to accommodate additional students.
Students who attend SI gain a greater understanding of the material and improve their academic skills. They also achieve a higher grade in the class than students who do not attend. Both national and on-campus studies have shown that students who attend SI on a regular basis average between a half and full letter grade higher than students who do not attend SI.
The SI Leaders (SILs) who provide the SI Sessions are students who have successfully completed the course with a B+ or better and have been recommended by the professor to provide assistance to those enrolled in the class.
Holman Learning Center provides training for SILs to assist students through collaborative learning and self-developed study guides. The SILs attend your class sessions, take lecture notes, complete the readings and meet weekly with the professor to ensure that the material covered and discussed in SI is accurate with the professor's presentation of the information.
