King Chavez Parks (KCP) College Day Program at Eastern Michigan University

The King-Chavez-Parks (KCP) College Days Program introduces underrepresented middle school students to the opportunity of a college education.

The Program comprises five components, each building on the foundation of the previous year. Students from participating school districts are identified at the completion of the seventh- grade year (i.e. rising eight graders) for a two-and-a-half day summer residential experience, that ecnourages them to compete high school by providing an introduction to college life and career possibilities.

Over the following four summers, they have the option to enroll in KCP College Day summer programs that build on the "rising" eighth grade experience. Key features of this program includes.

  • Students live on campus in EMU residence halls.
  • Students are provided with a high school coursework guide.
  • Students are exposed to academic and career fields.
  • Students are involved in different activities (including field trip) to stimulate their intellectual interests.
  • Participating school districts have agreed to implement an educational contract that stipulates that each KCP participant will maintain an attendance rate of 90% and at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA (on a four-point scale).

The KCP College Days Program has been sited by the American Council on Education (ACE) as being one of the five national early awareness programs that have proven effective in transforming students’ lives.
