Background
GEAR UP/College Day is a federal, state and university-funded program which emphasizes early college readiness. GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. Local schools, universities and community organizations form partnerships to provide students with greater access to postsecondary education.
National GEAR UP/College Day Program
The program aligns with the recommendation of the Michigan Lt. Governor’s Commission on Higher Education and Economic Growth, which calls for doubling the number of college graduates in Michigan within the next 10 years. GEAR UP/College Day is administered by Michigan’s 15 public universities. There are 77 schools in the 38 school districts participating in the program. Services to students begin in the 7th grade and continue with the same students through graduation.
