How do I apply for a tutor?
Any currently enrolled Eastern student may apply for free individual tutoring through the Holman Learning Center.
When and where do I meet my tutor?
Students are responsible for contacting the tutor. Tutoring takes place in most public places on EMU campus between 9:00 am and 10:00 pm.
Am I permitted to meet just once or twice with a tutor, like right before my tests?
Due to the mission and goals of tutoring, a tutor is unable to meet with a student just a few times or on an “on-call” basis. Peer tutoring is a commitment of at least one hour a week, though tutors may work with a student for up to two hours a week as a general rule. This is for the benefit of the student and serves to increase the effectiveness of tutoring.
Do I need to be having academic problems before I ask for tutoring assistance?
No, you don’t need to be having problems before asking for a tutor. Many students want to stay ahead of the class by getting help early in the semester.
What can I do in addition to tutoring to help me with my coursework?
In addition to tutoring, there are other services offered through the Holman Learning Center or other departments that may be helpful to students. Students may have a Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader available in their undergraduate course that can assist with developing study skills and reviewing course-related material. Check the website (tlc.emich.edu) for a list of classes that have SI available. In addition, tutoring may be offered through some departments within a college. This tutoring is available on a walk-in basis and each tutoring lab has its own hours of operation. Check with your department to get more information on departmental tutoring if it is offered. The Holman Learning Center also offers skill-building workshops periodically on topics such as test taking, time management, and preparing for finals. Visit the HLC website for details and a schedule or stop by the office (Room G-04 Halle) for more information.
Why won’t my tutor give me direct answers to my questions?
Tutors are there to assist you in the learning process. The best way for that to happen is for the tutor to help you find your own answers to your questions.
Can I be sure that I will pass my course in which I am being tutored?
You are the key ingredient as to whether you pass your course or not. Most students who receive tutoring can improve their grade during the semester of tutoring if they are willing to put the time in to be successful.
What are the qualifications of the tutors at HLC?
HLC individual tutors have passed the course that they are tutoring with a B+ or better and have an overall GPA of at least 3.0. The tutors are undergraduate or graduate level students who receive training through the HLC and are supervised by a Master Tutor and the Learning Specialist.
Does my professor have to know that I am receiving tutoring?
The tutors will not inform your professor that you are receiving tutoring; HLC tutors work only with the student. If you would like your professor to know that you have sought assistance with his/her course, you may choose to tell them. Tutoring is not recorded on your academic transcript.
