Peer Tutoring

Holman Learning Center (HLC) provides free one on one tutoring for many 100-200 undergraduate level courses. Although great effort is made to fill tutor requests, Holman Learning Center cannot guarantee a tutor for all 100-200 level courses. Tutors are available to help you stay ahead and succeed in college classes. Read the Peer Tutoring FAQ for more information.

What to expect in a tutor session:
  • Sessions are very interactive, and tutors will lead you in doing your own work.
  • Tutors will help you to become an independent, confident learner.
  • You will schedule tutoring appointments in advance with your tutor, meet regularly at the same time and place for tutoring, and receive tutoring from 45 minutes to one hour, up to twice a week.
  • Tutors will help you structure your work, and can help you discover your learning style.
  • Tutors can help you with your study skills, and refer you to workshops at HLC for more help.
What NOT to expect in a tutor session:
  • Tutors will not do your work for you, write, edit, or proofread your papers, or give you answers without asking you questions.
  • Tutors will not re-teach the course material. You must attend class, do the assigned reading, and take notes to receive tutoring.
  • Tutors will not be available only for study sessions before exams. You are expected to meet with your tutor every week.
  • You will respect your tutor’s time (they are students, too!), and contact him or her ahead of time if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment.
