Individual Tutoring

We are looking for dependable students who are committed to helping others, and able to communicate and listen effectively. Tutors will have a 3.0 or higher overall GPA, and will have received a B+ or better in the courses they tutor.

Tutors need to be enrolled in at least 6 credits during fall and winter semesters as an undergraduate student, and at least 4 credits as a graduate student. Peer tutors should be empathetic, nonjudgmental, and supportive of their fellow students.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Attend training, either at the start of Fall or Winter semester, or during the semester with a Master Tutor
  • Complete paperwork to track time with students, and what topics were covered in each session
  • Read your tutor group's Web Caucus conference weekly, to stay up-to-date with HLC news, and to talk about tutoring with other tutors
  • Read your tutor manual and become familiar with tutor strategies and references
  • Watch short training videos to enhance your tutoring skills

Supplemental Instruction Leader

Supplemental Instruction is looking for excellent students with successful study habits and a desire to help other students learn and use academic skills in an effort to achieve academic success at Eastern Michigan University. As a Supplemental Instruction Leader (SIL), your primary responsibility will be to provide two to three SI sessions per week in 100 and 200 level courses.

You will also attend the class lectures, (reading the assignments and taking notes) and meet with the professor to assist in a greater understanding of the course material. Through your sessions, you will help the students improve their academic skills such as time management. note taking, reading and comprehension, test preparation and test taking strategies

In addition, you will attend weekly meetings with your SI Team Leader (SITL) and utilize WebCT modules in the development of helpful sessions.

Requirements
  • Upper class student with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade point average
  • Completion of the specific course (B+ or better) you would like to be a SIL in
  • Enrollment in six credits (undergraduate) or four credits (graduate students) during the fall and winter semesters
  • Referral from a professor is desirable
Responsibilities
  • Participate in two days of training prior to the start of the semester
  • Attend weekly team meetings andmeet with SI professor each week
  • Utilize WebCT modules in developing your SI sessions
  • Prepare and provide two to three SI sessions per week
  • Assist students in gaining a greater understanding of the course material, while improving their academic skills
  • Develop leadership and communication skills
  • Complete required paperwork every two weeks in an accurate and timely manner
  • Communicate regularly with SITL to make sure you are updated on all relevant information related to Supplemental Instruction and Holman Learning Center

Student Assistant Positions

Customer Service: - No positions open at this time
These critically vital positions handle the front desk of Holman Learning Center. These student assistants answer phones, greet visitors, assign tutors, make appointments, make copies for tutors, prepare lots of mass mailings, and assist with some typing and data entry. These positions may required the student to run campus errands.

Data Entry: - No positions open at this time
These positions require the student assistants to spend the majority of their time entering data for record keeping and report manipulation. Some positions involve more desktop publishing projects than simple data entry. As needed, data entry student assistants may be asked to assist with mass mailings or to cover the front desk. These positions may sometimes required the student to run campus errands.

Students filling this position provide high-skilled computer support, pull statistics and generate graphs in report format. The student in this position develops and trouble-shoots the department databases as well. This position involves high-volume, short deadline projects.
