About the Learning Center

Robert H. Holman, executive vice president for Discount Tire Company Inc. and Eastern Michigan Graduate, thinks that his boss sets a great example for philanthrophy. Inspired by Bruce T. Halle's gift to Eastern, Holman made a significant gift to EMU. In honor of their gift, the University has announced that it will rename the Learning Center: The Robert H. Holman Learning Center.

Holman worked for Discount Tire Company while a student at Eastern Michigan University. With the skills and knowledge he gained, he soon became the company's accountant. Shortly after he graduated, he transferred to the company's corporate headquarters in Arizona and was promoted to vice president. Subsequently, his duties increased, and he was named senior vice president and chief financial officer. Holman's contributions to the company earned him the prestigious Discount Tire Company's "President's Award."

Holman said his years at EMU were a foundation for his career. "While at Eastern, I learned how to be a team player, as well as a leader. I learned to welcome challenges and rise to the occasion. I've carried the knowledge and skills with me throughout my career." Holman said he believes the education he received from Eastern, coupled with the hands-on experience from Discount Tire, has allowed him the opportunity to be a role model for the youth of tomorrow.

"In memory of my mother,
Adele L. Holman, whose staunch insistence upon education has allowed me to share my success and good fortune with others in their pursuit of academic excellence."
